Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Broadcast media plays an important role in shaping public opinion, informing the masses, and reflecting societal values. Ethical standards in broadcasting are essential for ensuring that information is presented truthfully, accurately, and without harm. In Jalingo Local Government Area, Taraba State, broadcast media outlets are among the primary sources of news and information for local populations. However, maintaining ethical standards in broadcast journalism has been a challenge in many regions, with issues such as sensationalism, misinformation, and the manipulation of content being of concern. This study will explore the role of broadcast media in upholding ethical standards in Jalingo, focusing on how broadcasters adhere to professional codes of conduct and the consequences of ethical violations in their coverage.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on broadcast media outlets in Jalingo Local Government Area, Taraba State, examining their adherence to ethical standards in reporting. A limitation of the study is the potential bias in responses from broadcasters due to the sensitivity of ethical issues and the possibility of reluctance to disclose lapses in professional conduct.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Broadcast Media: Media outlets that transmit information through audio-visual channels, including television and radio.
  2. Ethical Standards: A set of moral principles and professional guidelines that govern the behavior of journalists and media practitioners, ensuring fairness, accuracy, and objectivity in reporting.
  3. Media Credibility: The degree to which the public trusts and believes the information provided by a media outlet, based on its adherence to ethical and professional standards.
